# Requesting Access from Your Catalog

{% hint style="info" %}
**Private preview**: The assets and access request link features are private preview and available to all accounts.
{% endhint %}

Data consumers can request two types of access:

* **Data access requests**: These access requests grant permission to query the data sources of an asset.
* **Masking exception requests**: These access requests grant permission to see unmasked values in specific columns of an asset that are normally protected by a masking policy.

To make one of these access requests, click the access request link on the data object in your data catalog and fill out the request form:

* If approval is not required, access (or the masking exception) is automatically granted once you acknowledge the data use agreement and answer any required question(s).
* If approval is required, the request will enter the approval flow and appear as `Pending`.

Once a request is approved, Immuta automatically provisions access through policies in the data platform and the [access request will show as `Approved`](#review-access-requests):

* For data access requests, the asset itself becomes available to query.
* For masking exception requests, only the approved columns are unmasked for that user, while all other users continue to see masked values.

## Steps to request access

The general process to request access to data and get it automatically provisioned through Immuta is to complete the following steps:

1. Find the data (table, view, data product) in your catalog.
2. [Click the `Request Access` button or the Immuta request link inside the asset](#request-access-button-or-request-link).
3. Sign in to Immuta, if prompted.
4. On the request form, use the radio buttons to show if you are requesting access for yourself or someone else.
5. **Fill out your answer** to the access question(s).
6. Review and **select the checkbox** for the **Data use agreement** tab, if there is one.
7. Click **Submit request**.
8. Get notified by your configured notification provider, if your access request is approved.

### Asset not registered

You may request access to an asset that has not been registered in Immuta yet. This will bring you to an **Asset not registered** screen. Immuta will then notify your administrators of your request, so they can configure the asset.
{% endhint %}
